First Time Rider
Taking an Amtrak train to your destination is an easy, affordable and comfortable alternative to driving or flying. If this is your first time, here's a guide to riding:
Getting Tickets
If possible, buy tickets in advance in order to avoid lines. Read our tickets section to learn about purchasing tickets
Getting To The Station
Some stations allow you to park for free or at a low cost. The station pages on the main page include information on parking. Other options include taking a cab, getting dropped off or public transit. Unlike the airport, you don't need to show up earlier than 30 minutes before your train.
Boarding
Once at the station, the attendant will let you know when the train has arrived. Some stations may have multiple gates that you can locate using monitors. Have your ticket and photo identification ready and the train conductors will tell you which car is yours.
Seating
On most Amtrak trains, seating is on a first-come, first served basis. Once onboard, the conductor may assign seats. On many trains, business or first class is available with ample legroom and many extra amenities.
Dining
Most trains feature some form of dining. Many of the Illinois routes feature cafe cars with a selection of hot and cold meals. Many long distance trains feature hot meals prepared on board at breakfast, lunch and dinner. If there is a dining car, it's best to make a reservation in advance.
Departing
The staff of your train will know which station is your final destination and will either notify you in person or through an overhead announcement, usually a few minutes in advance. Make sure to collect your belongings before the train comes to a complete stop as the train stays in one station for no more than five minutes.
More Questions
The train staff is there to assist you with whatever you need, don't be afraid to ask questions.
